How To Get Signed To A Record Label: You CAN Get A Record Deal

how to get signed to a record label, how to get signed to a label, getting signed to a record label, get signed to record label, how to get signed by a record label

How to get signed to a record label is a question that millions of artists ask themselves.  If you’re reading this, you’re probably one of those millions.  The interesting thing is this.  If we look at the music industry 20 years ago, there was so much that the average recording artist had no access to.  iTunes has only been around since 2001.  YouTube was founded in 2005.  Facebook began in 2004 and Twitter in 2005.  Until very recently, there was never any talk about data and analytics to the extent that exists today.  Let’s also consider the apps built on these platforms and the countless other tools available that weren’t even thought of 15 years ago.  Why is all this important to you, a recording artist looking to ink your first record deal?  Because for you to get a record deal, you have to first be discovered.  These tools among others are the cornerstone of music discovery in the modern music era.  This is the age of the new music business. Advancements in music creation, technology, distribution and marketing alone are quite remarkable, especially if you look at the short span of time that everything has taken place in.  With these factors alone, one could assume that it’s easier to get a record deal now than it was before.  Here’s the thing.  It’s definitely easier to get a record deal these days, if you have a plan, a team and you can do a lot of things extremely well at the same time.  The first problem, is most recording artists don’t have a music business plan, they don’t have a credible team and they’d much rather spend all their time focused on the creative process of making music, not doing what it takes on the business end to land a record deal.  Another huge problem that people don’t talk about today, is that there are sooooooooo many tools, tooooooooo many websites, sooooooooo many experts and tooooooooo much for the average recording artist to not only have to learn but to comprehend and put into motion at the same damn time. My stance is this.  You want to know how to get signed to a record label.  I get it.  Fair enough.  Know that there are many, many ways to approach getting signed.  For you, I’ve taken some time to explain 20 different things you can do to get signed.  Let’s get into it! Impact The Airwaves

Think about getting radio airplay when contemplating how to get signed to a record label.  When I read an article at USA TODAY that stated “radio remains the chief avenue of music discovery,” according to Nielsen’s new Music 360 report I was shocked.  “The data also reveals that 63% of listeners say they discover new music through terrestrial radio, which leads all sources of music discovery in terms of being “trusted” (43%) and “current” (49%).”  I guess with all the talk of digital I thought radio’s impact was slipping.  When I found it wasn’t the case, I knew I had to share this with others who may have been thinking as I was.

Aside from that statistic, radio definitely has benefits.  First, if you want to advertise on radio know that the rates have come down a bit.  There are so many platforms for people to advertise, radio had no choice but to adjust their rates to stay competitive.  Secondly, radio is great when marketing to specific region.  You can start where you live or where the majority of your fans reside.  Promote your album, new video, single or shows.  Outside of that, in the music promotion departments at major record labels, they’re always keeping tabs on who’s getting airplay.  Your song might be so great that it’s penetrating locally more than major artists.  Get your spins up and the record executives will surely come looking for you.

I do want to caution you when it comes to radio.  I’ve seen artists without a music business plan and realistic expectations invest in radio without getting any return.  Alot of things in this industry are about timing, strategy and proper planning so always remember that.  If you’re successful with getting radio airplay, you’ll go from planning how to get signed to a record label to fielding offers from multiple record labels at the same time. Don’t Sleep On Engineers…Everybody Is Somebody

Yes!  If you want to know how to get signed to a record label, know that connecting with an engineer might be the look you need. Why?  Recording engineers typically have close and special relationships with major artists and record label executives.  Engineers spend more time in the studio than anyone in the entire equation, including the artist, producers, songwriters and entourage.  Because of this, engineers often have a trusted relationship with people who can help you get signed.

Now, don’t expect an engineer to go out of his or her way to put you on if you don’t have a genuine relationship with them first.  They also need to feel extremely confident about your music.  And, they may even want to get cut in on any situations that could arise from them co-signing you.  Matter fact, always assume this is the case for anyone, not just engineers.  People want to be compensated, especially if they put you in a life changing situation.

When you look at how to get signed to a record label, always consider the professional circle of influencers you have access too.  Build honest relationships with everyone.  In this industry, connections are connections!  Don’t let standard job descriptions fool you.  This is a relationship business. Turn Those Followers Into Fans

Record labels aren’t really too keen on taking chances.  If eliminate the idea that signing you is a chance they’re taking, you’re more likely to get a record deal.  By building your fan base you’re doing just that.  Record labels like numbers, statistics, conversions etc.  Start talking their language and not only will you win their respect from a music business perspective but you’ll also increase your chances of getting signed.

Don’t spend too much time wondering how to get signed to a record label without building a solid fan base.  It used to be that talent was enough.  For the majority of artists, that’s just not the reality anymore. Performing nightly not only helps you build your buzz but it will put you in front of record label executives who came to see the headliner but happen to see you as well because you’re the opening act.  It also says something about how others perceive you if you can snag a spot on a good tour.  Obviously the headlining artist and/or their manager wouldn’t allow anyone who wasn’t of a certain level quality wise get on the bill.  Opening up for a larger artist means that someone is co-signing you.  I’ve seen the power of the co-sign do amazing things.

So the next time you’re plotting and planning on how to get signed to a record label, hop online and read up on who’s touring within the next 12 months.  Figure out a way to claim that opening act slot.  When you do, be sure to let me know! Charts Matter

I personally know record label executives who look not just at the top of the charts but at the bottom.  They want to know who’s bubbling.  It’s their job to sign artists who are on the brink.  If you’re doing everything you’re supposed to do as an artist, which includes having a well thought out music business plan, copping a spot on the Billboard Charts is well within reason.  Then, once you land on the charts, you can put your PR plan into full effect.  That’ll get you a bit more interest if you do it correctly.  From there, whatever is in the stars to happen for you will happen.

Don’t underestimate the role of a media outlet such Billboard can have when you’re thinking about how to get signed to a record label.  Do the work and a record deal will come to you.  Set out to overachineve in all that you do and even more will come your way. Sell Your Songs To Major Artists

I’m sure Neyo once questioned how to get signed to a record label.  Then, he started writing hits for other artists.  All of that led to him being able to secure a record deal.  As an artist, I’m hopeful that you are at least writing some of your own material if not all.

There is a drought of great songwriters in the music industry, so you could easily take your songwriting skills and use that to your advantage.  Using this strategy could work for you for quite a couple of reasons.  To start, everybody wants a record deal.  When a record executive hears someone say they want a record deal, they’re instantly thinking ‘here we go again..smh.’  Rather, you can lead the conversation by saying you wrote an amazing song that could possibly work for some of their artists.  From there, pitch your original songs and see how the relationship develops.  Secondly, the great side about being recognized as a songwriter is that you can start to make money off music.  Getting songs placed is a big business.

If you consider writing for others while you’re thinking about how to get signed to a record label, you might mess around and land a music publishing deal in the process because you wrote a hit for someone!  Do that and a record deal will come. Feed Your Musical Brain

Stop daydreaming about how to get signed to a record label and attend a music conference.  Music industry conferences are excellent platforms to get discovered for a few reasons.  To start, music conference are mostly geared toward education.  The average artist is more concerned with performing that they don’t even consider going to a music conference to learn even though most music conferences over a performance segment.

Alternately, music conferences may offer music feedback sessions.  Outside of getting to perform or play your music, you get to network with people who legitimately work in the music industry.  You’ve heard the saying “It’s who you know,” right?  That’s partly correct.  The other part of that which people don’t often share, is that it’s who knows you.  By not attending music conferences, you’re limited the number of people who could know you.  Those same people could be in a position to get you a record deal.

While there’s no rhyme or reason for learning how to get signed to a record deal, be smart and make intelligent educated decisions.  Choosing to attend a credible music conference can change your life, especially if you’re music is amazing.  Trust me, I’ve seen it happen more than once. Find Those Industry Executives

Here’s a great tip on how to get signed to a record label.  Just because a music executive doesn’t formally have A&R in their job title, that doesn’t mean they can’t get you a record deal.  If you work in or around music, odds are, you think you’re an expert to some degree on music.  Why?  Just being in the environment can have some privy to understanding not only what works but what the record labels are willing to sign.

Any smart person who wants to get signed to a record label knows that it is critical to network with music industry professionals. So, while doing so, don’t look past the Brand Manager, Promotions Coordinator or even Social Media manager at a networking event.  Introduce yourself and start building a genuine relationship.  If you’re successful at doing this, you’ll find out if they can help you get that record deal.  At the very least, they can introduce you to someone else who can if they can’t.  Now keep in mind that you have to invest the time in building a real relationship with this person first.  If you meet them on monday and start asking about a record deal on tuesday, you may not ever be able to capture their attention again.  Use this strategy with caution.

Sometimes when you think about how to get signed to a record label, you have to think about the not so obvious strategies that you can employ!  Hey, if it was simple, everyone would have a record deal. Teamwork Makes The Dream Work

Could the answer on how to get signed to a record label involve an emerging producer?  Hmmm.  Let’s consider this for sure.  For as long as I can remember and every so often, someone tells me that their looking for investors to put out their music.  These “investors” who I’m not quite sure really exist, outside of some illegal investor types that I can think of, are supposed to front all of the money you need to get a record deal.  To be frank, I just don’t really believe in “investors.”  Let me qualify this a bit more.  I don’t believe that you’ll meet someone you have no personal or professional connection to, who will just write you a check for $250K just because you’re talented.  Even if you think about the real life angel investors that do exist, I doubt they’d be looking to invest into an artists career.  You find me one who did where that artist has a deal now and I’ll retract my statement and issue a correction.  Until then, let’s continue.

There are several reasons why aligning yourself with a talented new producer might get you closer to landing that record deal.  For starters, many music producers are smart.  They are so smart, that many of them have great jobs.  When you have a great job, you make good money.  You may even make great money.  What does this mean for you?  Well, partnering with someone who can afford to invest in your music career is worth gold.  On top of that, a newer producer can help you craft a unique sound.  Bringing that uniqueness to the table may be what you need to get signed to a record label.  A true music producer brings so much more to the table than a $10 lease beat off the internet.  Would Macklemore be where he’s at today without Ryan Lewis?  I seriously doubt it.

Showcase Your Music

Here’s some advice on how to get signed to a record label.  Start entering music showcases.  Why?  Performing or playing your music in front of someone in the industry is the fastest way to make an impression.  Just because you make time to email your tracks and EPK’s to record label executives, it doesn’t mean they’re going to take the time to actually listen.  The average a&r easily gets hundreds of emails per day.  Think about.  Industry news alerts.  Internal record label memos.  A gang of emails from people they don’t even know asking for record deals and meetings.  The list goes on and on.  I actually sympathize with an a&r’s inbox, LOL.

So, now think back to what I said earlier.  By entering a music showcase, you’re standing right in front of the a&r, industry manager or record label executive.  They have to respond to your music in some capacity and then of course after the event is over, you can network one on one.

There’s nothing like instant gratification sometimes.  And while much of this industry is hardly ever instantly gratifying, remember that positioning yourself is key.  So when thinking about how to get signed to a record label, remember that to win at anything, you have to at least be in the running. Often times, music artists want to go platinum, win Grammy’s and tour the world.  And while all those things are great, it’s important to know, that like Meek Mill said, “it’s levels to this shit.” In your case, this means that the closer you get to building your buzz the closer you will get to getting signed to a record label.  So let’s take a small area, like a city for example.  The mayor is out shaking hands and kissing babies.  And for someone not even in politics, I bet you know who the mayor is in your city.  How’s this possible?  Because the mayor campaigned for people to know the name, just as you should.  Do you think your local Mayor has connects with state and federal government?  Of course.  So when you become so widely known in your city as a whole, you’ll start to gain connects with people in the music industry.  From local music influencers like dj’s, radio hosts and record label reps, on up to major artists, executives, managers and a&r’s who visit your city during tours.

Set your sights on promoting your music to your local community first.  From that you’ll develop a local fan base.  If your music business plan is on point, you won’t have to wonder how to get signed to a record deal.  You’ll be getting calls and will have access to more options than you can imagine.

Could Twitter Promotions Be The Answer?

If you want to know how to get signed to a record label, just for a second, consider that it could be as simple as utilizing Twitter.  If you are not using Twitter to promote yourself you’re making a huge mistake.  Second only to Facebook, Twitter is a huge social networking platform that allows users to say whatever they want in 140 characters or less.  Within the enormous community of Twitter, you have music fans from around the globe chiming in on the music they love or just downright hate.  It’s freedom of expression to the fullest.  In addition, a&r’s, managers and record label executives utilize Twitter to discover who’s hot, new and fresh in music. how to get signed to a record label, how to get signed to a label, getting signed to a record label, get signed to record label, how to get signed by a record label

Recently, industry heavyweight Lyor Cohen shared his thoughts about Twitter and Youtube.

“In the modern A&R business we are all looking for talent in various places, and certainly Twitter is a terrific place to look at talent,”

Cohen said during the recent Midem music conference. “If you want to get signed, you have to engage with Twitter, and of course YouTube.”

Now don’t get me wrong.  I’m not saying that ALL you have to do to get signed to a record label is sign up for a Twitter account and start tweeting.  First you need to have a music business plan.  Then, you need to add Twitter music marketing.  From there, you need to figure out what type of Twitter analytics you can access and create a plan not just to use Twitter but to start shattering some Twitter records.  Start small and set goals.  For example, your first goal could be to have more Twitter followers than any other artist in your genre in the city where you live.  You could set a smaller or a larger goal, that’s just an idea.  Now it’s not enough to have followers.  Once you have followers, you have to start engaging with them and this will drive your popularity up but whatever you do, DON’T BUY FOLLOWERS.  Outside of tainting all your hard work and metrics, it’s idiotic, unless you want to bamboozle your way to the top…SMH.

All in all, as you’re trying to figure out how to get signed to a record label, it’s important to know that there isn’t just 1 way.  Even if you know someone who got signed to a record deal, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen for you, the exact same way it happened for them.
